Small in size, mice make great little pets! Here we will recommend the best care for the latest additions to the family.
Male mice must be housed ALONE. This is because male mice are known to be very territorial and cause fatal injury to other male cage mates.
Female mice must be housed with other does for company. Female mice are very social and can become depressed without a friend.
Fresh water should be provided daily for your mice.
Food should always be available for your mice, but don't get tricked into feeding extra when their food bowl is stashed under that toilet roll over there!
We are often asked about tank sizes for housing mice. Minimum size would be a 10 gallon tank for 1 mouse, an additional 5 gallon thereafter per mouse.
For cage sizes, 50cm wide by 30cm tall by 60cm long is the minimum for mice, but the bigger the better!
A substrate of a dust extracted material such as kiln dried wood shavings or care fresh can be used for the enclosure. Here at Burford Mousery we use a hemp based horse bedding known as Aubiose.
Enrichment is important for your pets! A 17.5cm fly 'n' saucer is the ideal wheel for your mice to use. Toys such as toilet paper rolls, boxes and timothy hay are all great fun for your mice!
Our Care Routine
Healthy mice are happy mice. Here at Burford Mousery we spend a lot of time perfecting the husbandry of our mice. As well as all the above that we do for our animals we also use the following:
"100% natural, organically cultivated hemp
Waste management is high on the list of priorities to protect our environment and Aubiose contributes greatly to the environment as it completes it's own 'life cycle loop' naturally."
A lot of people complain about the smell of keeping mice, since moving onto this bedding we would never turn back! Easy to clean, works out cheaper than other bedding choices and is perfectly safe for your little meece feet!
With this bedding we do a full clean once a week, followed up with a spot clean every other day and ammonia levels are kept under control very well.
"Diatomite is used as an insecticide, due to its abrasive and physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate."
Here at Burford Mousery we use a food grade version of diatomaceous earth as a preventative treatment to mites. To do this we sprinkle a small amount into the bottom of the enclosure before placing aubiose on top.
Ivermectin is a valuable medication to have to hand when you have as many mice as we do! Although mites are rare in the mousery, we ensure that preventative treatment is in place to avoid infections and illnesses.
This medication is given to our mice on a monthly basis to make sure that they have no nasties lurking in their fur!
